How to wear “athleisure” and still #justgetdressed

You’ve heard the buzzword “athleisure” but did you know it has actually made it into the  Merriam-Webster dictionary?  Athleisure “refers to casual clothing—like yoga pants, sweat pants and hoodies—that are designed to be worn both for exercising and for doing (almost) everything else.” 

So basically, it’s wearing sneakers and leggings and generally sporty clothes no matter if you’re headed to lunch, the office or anywhere in between.

Like it or not, athleisure is here to stay, but like anything else it can be taken too far and it can be easy to fall into a  yoga pants 24/7 rut – the exact opposite of my #justgetdressed mantra.

So while there’s no doubt that atheisure-wear is extremely comfortable and can look surprisingly chic, it can also read as sloppy and a little too gym-like, depending on how you wear it.

Here are some tips to help you pull off the trend:

  1.  Stick to a neutral, monochromatic palette for the most clean and chic look.  Grey, Black and white with accents of muted, sophisticated colors are a good bet.
  2. Mix in your “real” clothes for a more elevated look.  Add a jacket, blazer or cardigan to your leggings and tunic.  Or wear a cozy, updated “sweatshirt” with your favorite boyfriend or skinny jeans.
  3. Pay attention to your shoes!  A cool, chic monochromatic athleisure look can be wrecked with the addition of neon, multi color running shoes.  Grab a pair of updated sneakers in black, grey or another muted color.  Check out brands like nike, adidas and vans.  Post work-out, swap your sneaks for a pair of booties or flats.  
  4. Add a funky accessory after your workout… Throw on a long pendant necklace or a set of stacked bracelets, use some dry shampoo, swipe on some lipstick and you’re good to go!
